A 3D reboot of the game, Yume Nikki: Dream Diary, was released for Windows on February 23, 2018. It was developed by Active Gaming Media under supervision and cooperation from Kikiyama, featuring some unused design concepts from the original game.
Use common sense.Keep shitposting to a minimum. Please make attempts to follow. Pretty disappointing for me so far honestly. The game is a jittery mess, FPS appears to be locked to different quality settings (on max it's locked at 30 fps), and there's no 1440p so it's gonna look pretty blurry for you if you're above 1080pThey took Yume Nikki and turned it into a generic, clunky, ugly indie horror game. I am not opposed to change, in fact I welcomed that this would not be the Yume Nikki I love, but the direction they took it is just weak. The soundtrack is fantastic so far (I definitely got chills when I went to sit down and read the diary in Madotsukis room) but that's pretty much it, I think anything else I like about it is probably just the nostalgia blinding me of seeing old Yume Nikki stuff remastered. Under the nostalgia I feel is a very mediocre game. I've played the game for about 2 hours for now and I have very mixed feelings about it.
There's not really an element of exploration like in original and instead it feels more like point-and-click game which in some parts I can appreciate. Sometimes though I get annoyed when invisible walls (which seems to be everywhere) prevent me for exploring deepest parts of the worlds.I like how some place look distinctively different from original game: For example what I think was eyeball world is this time actually streets of some town instead of generic black background with weird images on it. This world is also home of the biggest gripe I have with this game: Everything will kill you.
It really diminishes the flow when you try to stop and explore something but game want's to kill you in every single turn.I also hate how many of the NPC:s have fleshy/organic kind of look. So far Strober, Henkei Shita and Prioris have been biggest contenders of this. I would've like them to keep their cartoony design. It feel like they tried their hardest to make everything look scary.I loved that you can actually 'read' Madotsuki's diary and see her add things to it after visiting different dream worlds. I expected it to be like Yume Nikki but with a bit more direction in gameplay.I liked the original Yume Nikki because, in addition to it being a surreal dream world exploration game (which made for unexpected/naturally disturbing places and events) it also conveyed a mysterious story through the 'show, not tell' method (similar to Dark Souls). The game was drenched with symbolism - strange dream-like creatures and surreal worlds that were totally different from one another - and as you explored the nooks and crannies of Nadotsuki's dreams, you'd start to form theories on the protagonist's backstory. However, I could see why a lot of people couldn't get into Yume Nikki - the gameplay is way too open ended with no discernible objective. You just sorta have to wander around with the wiki page pulled up in order to find all 26 effects.
This was a turnoff for some of my friends. This is what I thought Dream Diary was going to be:. Fully reimagined 3D worlds from the original Yume Nikki with 3 degrees of freedom of movement in each world. Open exploration game like the original with a slightly more cohesive objective (instead of having to look for the effects with no in-game tips, you'd have to solve puzzles). Perhaps these puzzles would span through multiple worlds. Perhaps some would require you to obtain an effect as a prerequisite.
From what I can see it looks like if it took out most of the creative energy and soul from the original, cranked the nihilistic undertones to 11 and then decided to make a clone of inside midway through. It's like making a remake of witches house but replacing all the death scenes with jumpscares, or making a remake of Ib but replacing all of the beautiful music with the soundtrack of desert bus and replacing all the characters that aren't Ib with nooses, corpses and signs that say 'lyfe suckss:::(((((((' while also purging every colour that isn't grayApologies for the rant, I'm just livid after watching the uboa scene and a few trailers. Not bad.I really liked game's soundtracks, game's displays like dream diary's doodle thing, Monoe and Monoko part, etc. But I always remain the thingys: Lots of glitches, and the nostalgia of original YN. Because YN with puzzles and action things was blown up my mind at first for me. How can I expect that remake would add actions at the game that hikikomori girl is protagonist? And, I have a some little negative feelings at they got rid of a lot of effects and maps, characters such as Mars san.
Imagine that cool-remaked Mars event. In a little space of my heart, there is always the hope that remaking Ib with that actions and puzzle would be FANTASTIC. Just like everyone else said: yndd’s framerate is abysmal, the jump delay keeps getting me killed, and i’ve fallen off the mall elevator about 3 times already just by accidentally walking inside the wall. I bought it the hour it was released and i admit i didn’t play too much of it, but it seems clunky. Well, a bit shit tbh. I’m really disappointed, because it seems like a really messy release of a potentially beautiful game full of secrets! Plus, i really want to unlock all the art in madotsuki’s diary.
Hopefully they’ll patch it, but who knows. Copy and paste from my response on the other threadI played it for about 30 minutes. The graphics are beautiful and the music is good but I don't like the 2 dimensional movement that a lot of places seem to have. I'll play more definitely before I make a final judgement and 30 minutes isn't really enough time to play to make a decision but so far I don't really like it.Imo it seems they got rid of the exploration and from what I've seen in comments, its more of a platformer.Again as stated above I'll definitely play more but I feel like we kinda been played. Near 100% with 4-5 hour game play.I feel like this is a game that didn't need to be yume nikki. Or rather, doesn't have much connection in spirit to the original. It's pretty painfully obvious they were aiming for a Limbo angle (even some of madotsuki's animations, namely jump land to run look a lot like Limbo but worse).

And the 'dodge the light' with the light house? Come on.Tons of puzzles and platforming. All the things I hated about Limbo (dying over and over until you do x right) is present in this game. Which is fine, but not for yume nikki.Like, nothing is even abstract or symbolic aside from direct references to the 1st game.
From Malls to Factories, schools, old japanese market allies everything looks like what they're supposed to look like a lot of the times. I just don't understand. There's nothing mysterious or confusing. There's just a lot of things about this game that makes it an average indie game. The mannequin shit? It's so cheesy. Uboa being a jumpscare? Why is the limb girl chase you now with a spooky laugh?
How generic could you be? Nothing's mysterious.
Just references and 'boo!' Moments.Like look, there's nothing to discuss with games like this. Everything is so obviously put in to advance you to the next level. Why is the fisherman there?
Oh he has to give you an item. Ofc why else would he be thereThere isn't a single NPC in this game that has no obvious purpose aside from ones that reference the old game. Hence, 0 mystery. The point of yume nikki and the idea of dreams is that so many things are so abstract beyond recognition and only leave a certain impression. That it's born out of a jumble of our consciousness. But everything's so clear cut in this 'dream' it might as well not be about dreams and just be an average indie horror platformer. Also, kind of a side complaint. Why call the journal parts you collect as 'concept art'?
Such a stupid decision that kills immersion for no good reason. And the animations holy shit does it take a long time to pick up an item or do anything. It's not even like the puzzles are that clever.
It's just annoying chores. Same goes with the shitty red lasers that kill you in the alley. This part is so annoying and not in the fun/challenging way. It's forced gameplay.
I'd rather love to interact with more things and be able to examine the place slowly.Yume nikki now requires skills to play. Kikiyama either really loves limbo or they're lying about how they 'strictly directed' the project. So far: 54 minutes, 5 achievements.
Got the rosary(?) and knife effects. Visited the docks, a bit of the desert and ghost world(??).My opinions on it:I have not had any issues with the fps, besides a single spike at the beginning. Found a bug where I fell through the map. Agree on the disappointment that I can't freely explore some areas. Wish some maps like the desert were at least bigger as well.Putting those aside, I really like the game so far.
The music is amazing. The usage of sounds from the original is so endearing. I liked the little nod to the toriningen picnic party that was placed in there, tho it made me sad. I was legit terrified a few times, because I am so not used to enemies chasing me down or 'killing' me (besides stabbed toriningen, ofc). I am interested to see where this goes further, but I will not be playing any more today.I love the diary concept art idea and the item search option. My reunion with Shitai-san was traumatic. From what I have seen I think the game does a decent job at sending us back to the world from the original game, but also doesn't shy away from introducing new characters and mechanics (not like the original had many).
I think a lot of people dislike it not because it's a terrible game, but because they had their hopes too high up, yet I'm really not sure what they expect for this game to do/show for them to nod and say 'yes, this is a good tribute to the original'. Like, really, what were everyone's expectations that are now 'so very disappointed'. As someone who usually dislikes 3D games of any kind, I really like YNDD.
Maybe it's because most of it is controlled 2 Dimensionally, I don't know. I don't think it's ugly, I find the graphics very charming. My only gripe is how terrible the climbing/jumping is. Sometimes Madotsuki seems to hit her head and sometimes she won't register a ledge there.Edit: It also conveys a much more convincing dream environment than the original.
A whole lot less looping worlds with black parallax backgrounds. This game and the original both have their own unique charms, though.
While I enjoy the visuals and gameplay more in YNDD, the original's environment and atmosphere is definitely unforgettable.
